To make room on the roster, the Yankees optioned right-hander Allan Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Blackburn, 31, struggled this season with the New York Mets, going 0-3 with one save and a 6.85 ERA in seven appearances (four starts). He was designated for assignment by the Mets on Aug. 16 and released three days later.
Over nine seasons with the then-Oakland Athletics and Mets, Blackburn has compiled a 22-31 record with one save and a 4.96 ERA in 93 career games (86 starts). The California native earned an All-Star selection in 2022 while pitching for Oakland.
Initially drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2012, Blackburn was later traded to Seattle and then to Oakland, where he spent most of his career. The Mets acquired him from the Athletics in July 2024 and he went 1-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 12 appearances (nine starts) over parts of two seasons prior to his release.
