WNBA's Dallas Wings Fire Head Coach After Argument With Team President
credits: Jessica Hill | source: AP The Dallas Wings are three games under .500 after losing eight straight. They still have a shot to get the WNBA’s last playoff spot, but they’ll have to reach that goal under a new head coach, because their old one just got canned.
After the Wings’ 93-80 loss to the Washington Mystics on Sunday night, Dallas head coach Fred Williams was seen in a shouting match with team CEO and president Greg Bibb outside the locker room. According to High Post Hoops, both men had to be restrained by assistants. Williams played down the altercation when asked about it:
“You know, just, typical — when you’re in a drought, you have some emotional things going. Got to sometimes just let things go and regroup and just find a way to get a W.”
At that point, Wings PR interjected to tell reporters “game questions only”.
Shortly after, the team announced that Williams had been “relieved of his duties.” Was it the argument in front of everyone, the eight-game slump, or both? In his statement, Bibb didn’t mention the spat with Williams. “I felt this move was necessary,” he said. “The season has not met our expectations.”
Assistant coach Taj McWilliams-Franklin will serve as interim HC for the rest of the season. That stint could be extended depending on whether the Wings can stay ahead of the 13-18 Las Vegas Aces over the next three games.
