Virginia Caps Unlikely Comeback Against Wake Forest With Buzzer-Beating Banked Three

Virginia might have pulled off the most unlikely win of the entire college basketball season Tuesday night. With just 22 seconds left in the game, Wake Forest had a seven point lead and possession of the ball. Just 22 seconds later they had lost, 72-71. Here is what the game’s win probability graph looked like:

First, a London Perrantes steal led to a Marial Shayok three. After a quick foul, Wake’s Devin Thomas missed two free throws, and Malcolm Brogdon hit a Virginia three. Another quick foul resulted in one made free throw by Bryant Crawford, and a 71-69 Wake Forest lead. That set the stage for Darius Thompson, in his only shot of the game, to make this crazy, lucky, ugly, banked three-pointer as time expired:

Virginia, the 11th ranked team in the nation, has shot 41% on three-pointers this season. Against Wake Forest, for the first 39 minutes of the game, they were 1-13 from downtown. In the final minute, they were 4-4. If you know any Wake Forest fans, feel free to commiserate with and/or make fun of them, depending upon how sympathetic you’re feeling.
