USC Pretends Like It Didn't Lose The 2006 Rose Bowl
Photo: Lenny Ignelzi/ [object Object] The 2005-06 USC Trojans were an unholy powerhouse that went on an 12-0 romp through college football only to be upended in the 2006 Rose Bowl by Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns. The Trojans later had to vacate all 12 wins from that season due to the Reggie Bush scandal, but, as Austin sports anchor Joaquin Sanchez noted, the official USC game program claims that they also vacated the BCS Championship Game, which means the Trojans never lost it.
Of course, this is not how it works, as the NCAA only vacated USC’s wins from that season. Even if erasing victories is a meaningless, dumb punishment to begin with, the NCAA would never vacate a loss, and it’s silly to claim that it did so when it was one of the most memorable college football games of the century. Strangely enough, the game program does feature a detailed account of the contest:
You see, USC lost to Texas, but also didn’t lose to Texas. It makes perfect sense. The Trojans are just following the NCAA’s lead, which is to erase and rewrite practically everything as if everyone else didn’t see it with their own eyes.
