Two Men Charged With Murder Of Dwyane Wade's Cousin
Illinois DOC Two men have been arrested and charged with the murder of Nykea Aldridge, a cousin of Dwyane Wade who was shot to death in Chicago on Friday.
Brothers Darwin (left) and Derren Sorrells (right) were arrested Sunday afternoon. They were each charged with felony counts of murder and attempted murder, and Darwin was additionally charged with criminal trespassing.
Both brothers were out on parole at the time of the murder. Derren, 22, was released on parole with electronic monitoring on August 12, only 14 days before Aldridge’s murder. He was sentenced in 2012 to six years for possession of a stolen vehicle with intent to sell. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Gugliemi says Derren is a “documented member” of the Gangster Disciples.
His older brother, Darwin, 26, was released on parole in February 2016 for a similar stolen vehicle charge. His list of convictions date back to 2007 and include multiple counts of aggravated battery, felony possession of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a firearm.
In a press conference Sunday, Chicago police Commander Brendan Deenihan said the Sorrells were shooting at a driver who had dropped off women in the area, and shot Aldridge instead. Aldridge was pushing one of her four children in a stroller when she was shot. The child was not hurt.
The police used surveillance video and the cooperation of the driver to identify the Sorrell brothers as the shooters.
During the press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson pointed to the murder as an example of Chicago’s ongoing problems with gun violence.
These two offenders are the prime example of the challenges we face in Chicago with repeat gun offenders that don’t care who they shoot, they don’t care whose life they take, and clearly—clearly—don’t fear the consequences of their actions. [...] When will enough be enough? How often do we have to stand at a podium like this demanding of my judicial and policy partners some type of resolution?
Wade, who this offseason left the Miami Heat to play for his hometown Bulls, tweeted about the murder on Friday and Saturday.
Aldridge was one of 67 people shot in Chicago this weekend, 10 of them fatal, according to Jordan Owen of the Chicago Sun-Times. As of the time of this post, Owen reports three people have been shot Monday alone.
