Two Exquisite Flicks Of Feet Gave France The Decisive 2-0 Lead Over Germany
This goal—Antoine Griezmann’s second on the day and the only two of the match that has sent tournament hosts France into the Euro 2016 final—is all about two touches. The first is that lightning-quick little stab of Paul Pogba’s right foot that allows him to burst into space while leaving Shkodran Mustafi for dead and get a cross into the box; the second is the deft prod Griezmann gets on German keeper Manuel Neuer’s attempted clearance that sends the bouncing ball back through the German’s legs and into the net.
This match, thankfully, lived up to its potential for entertainment—a rarity in this tournament. Germany dominated basically the entire first half, only to give up a penalty thanks to a baffling Bastian Schweinsteiger handball in the box. Griezmann scored from the spot and France took their 1-0 lead into halftime. The second period was more equal, with both teams having chances, but only France were able to get on the scoresheet again.
France will now face Portugal in the final on Sunday. Hopefully that game looks more like this one than Portugal’s last one.
