Tom Savage's Four-Second Press Conference Was The Only Mercy
Rob Carr/Getty Images Tom Savage, you just quarterbacked the Texans to their seventh loss and turned the ball over three more times, including your weekly strip-sack. What do you have to say about it?
This video, while funny, is unfair. Savage did not bail on his postgame presser; there just weren’t any reporters there for it. (Which itself is also pretty funny.) Savage had faced the music at his locker earlier, where he said pretty much all that needed to be said:
“I’m really frustrated, to be honest with you,” Savage said. “There’s really no words for it. I don’t want to go out there and throw picks. That’s not my goal. I underthrew C.J. [Fiedorowicz] on the center route. It’s called the NFL. You’re not going to win games turning the ball over.”
Savage was 22 for 37 for 252 yards, but threw no touchdowns, two picks and lost a fumble. The turnovers were the difference in a game where Joe Flacco was no more effective, as the Ravens beat the Texans 23-16 in a Monday night game that was, spiritually, a Thursday night game. (An idle thought that keeps shoving its way into my head: It’s barely hyperbole anymore to say that most NFL teams would probably be better off this season with Colin Kaepernick.)
Savage has started five games this season, including the last four after Deshaun Watson went down for the season, and has turned the ball over twelve times, including an incredible seven lost fumbles. Though, as Terrell Suggs went through backup LT Kendall Lamm like he wasn’t even there, last night’s fourth-quarter strip sack wasn’t entirely Savage’s fault. The game-killing INT was, though:
The Ravens are somehow 6-5 despite being completely unwatchable, and in a putrid AFC that record currently has them in a wild card spot. The NFL has never felt less vital.
