Tigers Pitcher Daniel Norris Has Thyroid Cancer

Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris—probably best known for living in his van during spring training—has thyroid cancer, he announced today on Instagram.

Norris was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2011, and began this season as their top prospect, and one of the top 30 prospects in baseball. He was traded at the deadline to the Tigers, as the centerpiece of a package of prospects the Tigers received for David Price. Across 13 big league starts in Toronto and Detroit, Norris was 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA.

In his Instagram post, Norris says he found out he had a malignant growth on his thyroid a few months ago, while still with Blue Jays. He completed his season after one of his doctors concluded he could wait until the end of the season to have surgery. According to the Detroit Free-Press, Tigers GM Al Avila says the team knew about Norris’s condition when they traded for him, and he is expected to make a full recovery in time for spring training.
