This Goalkeeper's Free Kick Positioning Is ... Interesting
The routine for free kicks just outside the box is well-established. The defending team sets up a wall of five or six, and the free kick taker tries to smash the ball up-and-over/around/under the wall. If the goalie is lucky he has about half of a second to see where the ball is going.
But in this game between Nice B and Grenoble in France’s fourth division, Nice B has their goalkeeper positioned where the wall normally is, and the wall in the goal. The flummoxed Grenoble free kick taker went for a not-particularly-strong chip, which was easily cleared off the line. I think maybe the best move in this situation is to blast the ball as low and hard as possible, or maybe pass the ball to a teammate while the keeper is out of position?
