The Reds Really Boned It
Photo: Dilip Vishwanat/Stringer/ [object Object] Last night, the Cincinnati Reds had a 4-0 lead against the St. Louis Cardinals with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. They lost on a walk-off hit-by-pitch.
The Reds are terrible this season—although Joey Votto isn’t—but they dug deep and shit their pants in a spectacular way. Reliever Tony Cingrani induced two easy outs after a Yadier Molina single, but faced five more hitters after that. In order: walk, HBP, RBI single, RBI single, walk. Manager Bryan Price mercifully replaced Cingrani with Ross Ohlendorf, who walked in a run and plunked Molina to end the game.

“It was a pretty well-played game for eight innings,” Price said afterward, which was true. If the sport of baseball had games that only went for eight innings, the Reds wouldn’t look like inept clowns today.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time the Cardinals won a game in which they were losing by four or more runs with one out remaining was May 2, 2005. They beat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-9.
