The Red Wings Won On A Buzzer-Beater
Last-second winners aren't just for basketball. Daniel Alfredsson was credited with the goal with 0.4 seconds left in overtime against Pittsburgh, and Detroit nabbed a crucial two points in a pants-poopingly tight playoff race.
Some rough positioning and a tough turnover started the sequence. With under 10 seconds remaining, the Penguins apparently didn't think there was time for a counter-attack and had two men down by the blue line. But Evgeni Malkin was unable to glove a tipped puck, leading to a 3-on-1 the other way. With no time to pass, Alfredsson took a shot that deflected off Marc-Andre Fleury, then off Pittsburgh's Rob Scuderi, and into the net.
"There were like four goals [that went in] off our guys," Fleury said.
The Red Wings, with 77 points, now sit a point behind the Rangers for the second and final wild card spot in the East, with a game in hand. But it's not so simple. The Caps are still in the picture. The Rangers are tied with Columbus for the third and last spot in the Metropolitan, though with one more game played. The Leafs are clinging to seventh with 80 points, but falling fast. The Flyers, with 81 points, are in the one of the toughest stretches on anyone's schedule, yet have won four straight. Realignment makes for a more confusing playoff race, but still a damned exciting one.
