The Raiders Are Less Metal Than We Thought, Will Paint Gold Marks On Field
Dammit, Chris! You lied to us Chris!
For their next home game, against the Broncos on Oct. 11, the Raiders will indeed paint the 50-yard marks of their field gold, joining the rest of the NFL. Here’s Raiders owner Mark Davis, via the San Jose Mercury News:
“We’re waiting until the baseball season’s over,” Davis said. “We don’t paint our shield on the field, we don’t paint the end zones, we don’t paint gold things, but we’ll be painting them for the Denver game.”
[...]
“Nobody respects the Super Bowl more than Raiders,” Davis said. “I think we had a little bit to do with the merger. We’ve played in 10 percent of the Super Bowls and we hope to play in the next one.”
Previously, Sports Business Journal noticed that the Raiders’ 50-yard mark was colored good old-fashioned white, and tried to figure out what was up. The NFL gave the same explanation Davis did today, but that’s not what they heard from AEG facilities vice president and Oakland Coliseum general manager Chris Wright, who runs the stadium. He said there’d be no gold all season long:
“It has nothing to do with baseball. The last six home baseball games are through this weekend, and there will be no gold marks for the rest of the Raiders’ regular season.”
An NFL team breaking from the herd? It was too good to be true, Ponyboy.
