The New York Daily News' Sports Staff Has Been Gutted
credits: Drew Angerer | source: Getty The parent company of the New York Daily News reduced the 99 year-old tabloid’s newsroom staff by approximately 50 percent on Monday, and the sports department was especially hard hit. Per multiple reports, a sports staff of roughly 35 people was reduced to nine, including just five writers.
Corporate clickfarm tronc, which bought the News in September for $1, announced the cuts at a 9 a.m. meeting in the paper’s Lower Manhattan newsroom. It lasted for less than one minute. Editor-in-chief Jim Rich and managing editor Kristen Lee were among the cuts, according to the , which also said “sports and the photo desk were expected to be particularly hard hit.” Those affected by the layoffs will receive 90 days of severance.
