The Marlins Said Goodbye To José Fernández Tonight
Photo credit: Lynne Sladky/ [object Object] The Miami Marlins beat the Mets tonight, 7-3. The evening was full of remembrances of José Fernández, including a pregame moment of silence, a tear-choked coda from the Mets’ broadcast booth, and a tremendous leadoff home run from Dee Gordon. The team appeared genuinely shaken. Simply going out and playing baseball under the emotional weight of losing a beloved teammate is impressive; winning even more so.
After the game, the Marlins huddled around the mound together, just like they did before the game. Players offered words of condolence while Mets players looked on and fans chanted Fernández’s name. Derek Dietrich suggested they all leave their caps on the mound, so the team did.
As starting pitcher Adam Conley said, it’s José’s mound.
A truly devastated Dee Gordon gave a somber interview to Fox Sports Florida after the game, wherein he said that hitting a home run for Fernández was the greatest moment of his life.
Marlins players came back an hour later for a toast to Fernández.
Jose Fernandez is gone, but if tonight was any indication, it’ll be a long, long time before he is forgotten.
