The Cavaliers Make Baby Jesus Cry
So it's come to this. Twenty-five straight games, without even once stumbling into a higher score than their opponent's. That's statistically improbable, even with a depth chart like this.
"It's like Groundhog Day every day," said Antawn Jamison, perhaps a little redundantly. But yes, every day seems exactly the same. It doesn't matter the opponent, but these Cavaliers lace up their shoes, put on that jersey, and come out and get outplayed. That's not a generalization: it's a losing streak, they're losing every damn game.
Perhaps there's some consolation in the fact that the Cavs aren't losing games they're supposed to win. Every team they've lost to is better than them. By definition.
Take a look at that depth chart again: the 2010-2011 Cleveland Cavaliers are an unlikely mix of promoted D-Leaguers, past-their-prime vets, injury fill-ins, and Boobie Gibson. That's brutal. They're not losing sexy, like the 2008 Lions. They're losing boring, much like the previous record-holders, the 81-82 and 82-83 Cavs. Those Cavs were led by the immortal James Edwards, on his brief layover in Cleveland in a nine-stop NBA career. It's laughable to think any team could be "led" by James Edwards, but...J.J. Hickson.
There's still one record to go: The all-time major sports losing streak, held by the 1976 and 1977 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They'll tie that one tomorrow, then pass it Friday. But then: hope. Sunday they host the Wizards, who have lost all 25 road games they've played this season. But if they can't prevail there, the Cavs' streak loses some excitement. Chasing a record is good for fan interest. Breaking it, and continuing to lower the bar, is just sad to watch.
Good thing Dan Gilbert got those season ticket commitments before last season ended.
