The Cardinals Lost Their 58th Game

Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime García had a failure of an outing as he gave up six earned runs in four innings of work before leaving the game. García threw 64 pitches and allowed two home runs, included Flores’s.
The Mets also had some bad luck with their starter, when Jonathon Niese left the game with an injury after facing four batters in the first inning. He was on the hook for three earned runs, but the other six Mets pitchers who appeared held it together and allowed just one additional earned run.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wasn’t happy with the result, but he wasn’t mad about the team’s performance. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“That wasn’t bad baseball,” Matheny said. “It wasn’t like we had ugly play. We just had a rough start. We have to be honest, too. If we’re kicking balls all over the place and not making plays that’s one thing. That’s the kind of baseball that we haven’t seen here lately. You’re going to have those days when you try to pick your starter up.”
The Cardinals are 66-58 and 28-34 at home. There’s always the next game!
