The Cardinals Lost Their 44th Game
Photo: [object Object] The Miami Marlins took a lead in the seventh inning and never relinquished it Sunday as they beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-3.
Jonathan Broxton was tagged with the loss after the Cardinals reliever allowed two runs in the seventh. Giancarlo Stanton’s RBI double and Don Kelly’s sacrifice fly to score Stanton gave the Marlins a 5-3 lead. Miami added one more run in the eighth when Christian Yelich’s sacrifice fly scored Yefri Pérez.
Redbirds pitcher Michael Wacha gave up three earned runs with seven hits and two walks in his start, and required 101 pitches to get through four innings. Wacha credited his opponents, who made it difficult for him. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“I feel like they battled really good,” Wacha said, referring to the Marlins’ hitters. “They’re a great offensive team and that’s what I was expecting. Guys were battling out there, fouling off some tough pitches, and extending at-bats. It’s tough having those long innings there whenever you’re trying to get the team back in the dugout as fast as you can. Probably too many mistakes today. They were definitely grinding out some at-bats for sure. I felt good out there but the command wasn’t what I wanted to be. Overall, I felt fine.”
The Cardinals are 47-44 and 20-28 at home. There’s always the next game!
