Texas Avenges Their Sick Bovine Mascot, Shocks Oklahoma

The run-in to this week’s rivalry game against Oklahoma did not go well for Texas. First, Charlie Strong called social media “the downfall of society” in response to Kris Boyd tweeting about transferring during halftime. Then, his team kind of proved him right and got into some public squabbling about commitment. Worst of all, Bevo XIV the Longhorn was struck with a life-threatening condition and could not make the trip to Dallas for the game. So they put some horns on this doggy.

Texas came together, presumably to honor their sick mascot, and dispatched #10 Oklahoma with an impressive 24-17 victory. The final score is even a little kind to the Sooners, as Texas took a knee on first-and-goal.

Texas only passed 12 times to their 58 runs, and they came up with timely big plays all game long. There was Marcus Johnson’s tackle-breaking highlight tape of a touchdown run in the first quarter. There were a series of third down conversion runs by Jerrod Heard. Crucially, there was the 17-yard sack on 3rd-and-14 with under four minutes left that about sealed it for Texas. Hell, their much-mocked special teams even delivered, with kicker Nick Rose hitting a field goal and all three of his extra points.

Bevo has been with the Longhorns since they won the National Championship in 2005. Texas did not disclose his condition. Prayers up to Bevo.
