Texans Owner Donates $10,000 To Houston Group Opposing Anti-Discrimination Law
On Nov. 3, Houston residents will vote on Proposition 1, a proposed ordinance that would help protect people from discrimination at work, in public, and in the housing market. A major opponent of Proposition 1 is the Campaign for Houston PAC, a group that produced a campaign commercial in which former Astro Lance Berkman argues that the proposition should be voted down because it would lead to “troubled men who claim to be women” following girls into public bathrooms. It turns out that the PAC has another supporter from the local sports teams: Texans owner Bob McNair.
The Houston Chronicle reports that McNair mailed a check for $10,000 to Campaign for Houston. Jared Woodfill, a spokesman for the PAC, told the paper that the donation “was very exciting for us.”
In response to criticism, McNair released a statement explaining his opposition to the ordinance, also known as HERO:
“Houston is a city known for the diversity and exceptionalism of its hard working people. We are also a city that works to ensure that everyone is treated respectfully and fairly.
“I strongly believe that everyone who lives or works in or visits Houston should be treated with the utmost dignity and respect. Because of the way the HERO ordinance is written, it has begun to separate rather than unite our community. This problem can be solved by defeating the current bill in November, thoughtfully rewriting it and then resubmitting it to the voters.”
If Bob McNair’s political takes don’t bother you, then surely his opinions on J.J. Watt will.
