Teemu Selanne And Jean-Sebastien Giguere Say Goodbye With A Victory Lap
It was fairly close to a perfect moment in Anaheim last night, as Teemu Selanne was sent off by fans, teammates, and opponents in his 1,451st and final regular season game. But Teemu being Teemu, he decided to share the spotlight with an old friend. Get the tissues.
The Ducks are the top seed in the West and still have business to take care of. But the postseason ends either in elimination or in collective celebration, and for this one night, it was to be all Selanne's. The 21-year vet wore the captain's "C" for the game, and was named all three stars at its close. After receiving hugs from the officials and the visiting Avalanche, it was time for a victory lap, one that wouldn't be taken alone.
In all likelihood, this is the last regular season game for Avs backup goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Selanne's longtime teammate (the two were key pieces of the Ducks' Cup-winning team in 2007). Giguere, like Selanne, is a link to hockey's past—he is the last Hartford Whaler still active.
So Selanne grabbed Giguere, and took him for one last spin around the ice. The crowd pretty much lost its mind at that point, much as I did when I first saw this footage, much as you're probably doing right now. Teemu forever.
