Surging Red Sox Abruptly Shut Down By No-Hitter By Oakland's Sean Manaea
Sean Manaea, a rare bright spot on an otherwise mediocre A’s squad, threw the seventh no-hitter in team history against a Red Sox lineup that has averaged more than six runs a game this season.
Manaea gave up a walk to the first batter he faced, then settled down, ending the game with 108 pitches, 75 of them strikes, and 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 win. In the top of the sixth, Andrew Benintendi was initially awarded a hit, but the call was reversed after A’s manager Bob Melvin successfully argued Benintendi had run outside of the basepath.
With the no-hitter on the line, Manaea got two easy outs in the ninth, then gave up a walk before Hanley Ramirez grounded into a fielder’s choice. The A’s poured out of the dugout to celebrate with Manaea, the first to throw a no-hitter for the green and gold since Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010.
Manaea brought his ERA down to 1.23 and his team’s record up to 10-11; the Sox are 17-3.
