Sri Lanka's Cricket Staff Was Ordered To Strip If They Wanted Their Money
Sri Lanka’s cricket board was forced to apologize after an international tournament’s grounds crew was forced to take off and return their officially provided uniform pants before they received their owed wages, the BBC reports.
The crew was reportedly made up of around 100 young people, working for a daily wage of 1,000 rupees ($6.50) throughout a series of five One-Day Internationals between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. The workers were provided with Sri Lanka Cricket-branded trousers to be worn during work.
But at the end of the series, as the workers attempted to get their pay, they were told they would need to give back the pants first. The workers said they were unaware of this condition, and many in the crew didn’t bring a change of clothes. They were thus forced to experience the humiliation of walking home in their underwear.
For what it’s worth, the Sri Lankan cricket board condemned the actions, releasing a statement that read, “Whilst stern action will be taken against those responsible, Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to apologise to those subjected to this ignominy, and will take steps to ensure they are compensated.”
It’s unclear, however, if the workers are going to get their pants back.
