Someone's Trying To Stop The Tim Tebow-Brady Quinn Catfight
Way back in February, when we were still wiping the effluvia of Tebowmania off our jorts, GQ published an oral history of the then-Broncos QB's unlikely season. It was well done, but as so often happens with these things, an entire magazine article was sieved through to find the one hint of controversy. You didn't have to look too far: there was also-then-Broncos QB Brady Quinn, playing the iconoclast.
Quinn implied that Tebow got the starting gig because of fan support and not because his practice performance warranted it, and also that at least some of Tebow's success amounted to plain good luck. And then this:
"If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?"
We thought some selective quoting screwed over Quinn a bit, but everyone moved on. Quinn is backing up in Kansas City, and Tebow is "backing up" in Jersey. But perhaps beef is not 100 percent squashed just yet. Tebow recently spoke at the Gator Boosters' annual meeting, and opened up a little more than we've come to expect from him.
"I had a teammate at Denver who played the same position as me and he went to the University of Notre Dame. He would brag about his university, how great it was. Most of us in the locker room were like, ‘C'mon, we all had opportunities. We chose not to go there.' ... But he talked so much about his university that it became easy. I'd say, ‘Your whole team had one guy who ran under a 5.0 40 [yard dash]. Our kicker ran under 5.0.'"
(Here's a funny thing. The article containing the quote originally appeared at GatorZone, but no longer exists. The cached version still does, however, and the quote was salvaged by CBS Sports.)
It's not even really that mean, right? It's a startlingly human response from Tebow. We all know Notre Dame sucks these days, and we all know no one from Notre Dame can ever shut the hell up about it. But the one time Tim Tebow has to go and say something that makes us believe he might not be an automated GodBot speaking solely in AP gamer soundbites, his self-appointed protectors in the UF community have to scrub the damn thing from the internet. Free Interesting Tebow!
