Snow Trapped Niagara Women's Basketball On A Bus For 26 Hours
On Monday night at around 10 p.m., the Niagara Purple Eagles boarded a bus in Pittsburgh for what should have been a four-hour ride home. At 2 a.m. on Tuesday, just 30 miles or so from campus, the bus stopped. The snow had arrived. They were stuck for a while.
The lake effect snow that crippled parts of Western New York led to the total shutdown of local roads, including a 132-mile stretch of the New York State Thruway. With feet of snow dumped quickly, it became impassable and trapped hundreds of cars where no one could reach them. That left one bus filled with 25 players and coaches, and head coach Kendra Faustin's one-year-old son.
"We have snacks, some granola bars and pretzels," Faustin told the Associated Press in a phone interview prior to being picked up. "We found six bottles of water and have been rationing it. We thought we'd be here for a couple hours and a couple of hours turned into 12 hours. It's now 24 hours."
Through the players' tweets, you can trace the slow descent into madness—and then, at around 4 a.m. today, salvation.
