Ronaldo Gets Five-Match Ban For Shoving Referee
Photo: Manu Fernandez/ [object Object] After coming on as a second-half substitute in Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup match against Barcelona, Cristiano Ronaldo scored an incredible go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, picked up a yellow card for taking his shirt off during his signature celebration, and then a few minutes later got a second yellow for diving and was sent off. Then he pushed the referee, meriting the five-match suspension from the Spanish federation:
Real Madrid have an opportunity to appeal the suspension, but as it is, Ronaldo won’t be eligible to play domestically until Real Madrid’s Sept. 20 match against Real Betis. But even more embarrassing for Ronaldo was his attempt to clown Messi’s iconic El Clasico celebration from April during a completely meaningless Super Cup match.
He deserves to be suspended for that alone.
