Rockets Set NBA Record For Three-Point Attempts, Get Close To Franchise Record For Largest Blown Lead
Photo Credit: Rich Pedroncelli/ [object Object] While setting an NBA record for the most three-point shots attempted in one game, the Houston Rockets flirted with a franchise record for the biggest collapse.
The Rockets took 50 three-pointers against the Sacramento Kings on Friday night, making 21 of them. Their success there was most pronounced in the first quarter, when they made 8 of 15 and jumped out to a 38-19 lead. By midway through the second quarter, they’d stretched that lead to 29 points. But the Kings then chased them down for what would have been the largest franchise comeback for Sacramento and the largest collapse for Houston. Even though they outscored the Rockets in every quarter after the first, however, the Kings couldn’t cut the deficit past eight points and ended up with a 117-104 loss.
James Harden had his fourth triple-double of the season on 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Setting the three-point attempt record was maybe only a matter of time for the Rockets, who lead the league in threes attempted (37.1) but are fifth in percentage of threes made.
“It’s something we’re gonna embrace,” head coach Mike D’Antoni told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week. “If we take a three every shot, so be it.”
Last night’s 50 of 85 wasn’t quite “every shot,” but it was pretty damn close. Congratulations!
