Mandatory Credit: Matt Kartozian-Imagn Images The Arizona Diamondbacks and star second baseman Ketel Marte have agreed to a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.
The deal restructures a five-year, $76 million agreement that runs through 2027 with a team option for 2028. Basically, it adds three new seasons, meaning Marte will be under contract through 2030 with a player option for 2031. The new contract guarantees him an additional $64 million to what he would have been paid, and could be worth as much as $149.5 million with incentives, according to reports.
The Diamondbacks haven't yet announced the deal.
Marte, 31, placed third in National League MVP balloting last season when he established career bests of 36 homers and 95 RBIs to go with a .292 average in 136 games.
The two-time All-Star also placed fourth in MVP balloting in 2019.
Marte is in ninth season with the Diamondbacks after spending two seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He was traded to Arizona after the 2016 season in a deal that included Mitch Haniger and Jean Segura going to Seattle.
Overall, Marte has a .280 career average with 143 homers and 515 RBIs in 1,109 games.
