Former Braves Pitcher Tommy Hanson Dies After Falling Into Coma

MLB pitcher Tommy Hanson died late Monday night after suffering catastrophic organ failure and falling into a coma. The news was first reported by Zach Klein, sports director of Atlanta’s ABC affiliate, and later confirmed by the Braves.

Hanson finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2009, posting an 11-4 record with a 2.89 ERA. He spent four seasons in Atlanta, and last pitched in the majors for the Angels in 2013. He had minor league stints with the Rangers, White Sox, and Giants in the past two seasons, but never pitched well enough to break back into the majors.

There are no details yet as to what caused Hanson’s catastrophic organ failure. According to WSB-TV, he was first hospitalized early Sunday when he had trouble breathing.

Hanson was 29.
