Report: Seahawks Fire The Guy Who Didn't Hand The Ball To Marshawn Lynch
Photo credit: Ted S. Warren/ [object Object] Maybe you think this headline is unfair, given that Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has been with the team since 2011 and helped them win a Super Bowl in 2013. Maybe you’re right! But when you’re responsible for one of the most disastrous play calls in football history, that fact is going to come up when you eventually get fired.
Last night, Sports Radio KJR reporter Curtis Crabtree reported that Bevell has been axed:
The Seattle Times, and added that more turnover on the coaching staff is expected following Seattle’s 9-7 finish. There’s certainly reason for large-scale change: The Seahawks missed the playoffs for the first time in six years after being decimated by injuries on the defensive side of the ball, and the offense was propped up by Russell Wilson’s singular talents all year long. The offensive line was a mess all year, and the running game was non-existent—Wilson’s 589 yards on the ground led the team by more than 300 yards.
As for that play call that lost the Seahawks the 2014 Super Bowl, Bevell has always said that he doesn’t regret making it, and that he would call it again if given the chance. Maybe he will get that chance someday, but it won’t be with Seattle. He leaves the team with six winning seasons and one Super Bowl victory to his name. He should probably have two.
