Report: Machete-Wielding Man Killed After Breaking Into Colorado Football Offices [Update]

A man armed with a machete entered Colorado’s Champion Center—the Buffaloes’ state of the art sports medicine and football complex—early Wednesday morning. The suspect was shot and killed by police in a stairwell, per a report from . The police received the first distress call around 9:00 a.m. local time; officers issued a “shots fired” call around 9:20 a.m., 19 minutes before the all-clear message was officially issued. The man was taken into police custody, but the Daily Camera’s Mitchell Byars is now reporting the suspect has passed away, presumably from the gun shot wounds suffered in the altercation with officers. There have been no other injury reports regarding those working inside the building, as police would not confirm details of the incident to Byars at the time.

Update (1:15 p.m): The CUPD held a press conference, which you can view in full below via The Daily Camera. Scott Pribble, CUPD Public Information Officer confirmed the suspect is dead and university spokesperson Ryan Huff confirmed there were no other injuries sustained by students or employees in the building.

Pribble said the suspect, who remained unnamed, entered the Champions Center with the weapon after getting into an argument in the parking lot. Upon failing to comply with police commands to put his weapon down, the suspect was shot and eventually succumbed to the wounds.

Huff said the school will hold another press conference at 4:30 p.m. EST where it will provide further updates from the ongoing investigation.
