Report: Former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro To Be Red Sox First-Base Coach
We have ourselves a reverse Jim Tomsula situation: man leaves prominent position for a job he’s wildly overqualified for. Ruben Amaro was the Phillies GM up until last month, when the team declined to renew his contract. Now, according to a report from ESPN, Amaro will be taking over a position as the Red Sox’s first base coach. It’s not even the most prominent base coach position. If he continues sliding down the pay grade like this, he’ll be a batboy by July.
From the report:
Amaro, 50, took over as the Phillies’ GM shortly after the team won the 2008 World Series and held the role until September, when incoming president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail announced the club would not be renewing his contract. The Phillies have hired Los Angeles Angels assistant GM Matt Klentak as Amaro’s replacement, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com, although they have yet to make a formal announcement.
Amaro played in the MLB for eight seasons as an outfielder. His tenure included a stint with the Phillies, back in 1992.
