Cam Newton Hospitalized After Car Wreck
The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Panthers QB Cam Newton was injured in a two-car crash in the Uptown area of Charlotte today. Newton, whose truck overturned, was stretchered into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. (Update: Per the Panthers, Newton is listed in fair condition and spend the night in the hospital for observation. He suffered two fractures to his transverse processes, part of the vertebrae in his lower back.)
Update:
The Observer quotes a witness to the crash:
A witness, Tony Douglas, said he was walking on Church Street toward the Transit Center when he saw a sedan and the truck collide.
Douglas said the truck was heading south on Church and the Buick sedan was crossing Church from Hill Street when they hit.
The truck flipped several times, he said, coming to rest on its side. Douglas said he ran to the truck and saw the quarterback inside.
Afterward, he said, Newton "was alert. He was in pain."
The Buick's driver, writhing in pain on the sidewalk, told police that he was crossing Church Street when a truck "came flying down" Church and struck him.
Both Newton and the other driver were placed on backboards and in neck braces before being transported by ambulance.
Observer reporter Jonathan Jones was among those tweeting from the scene.
