Report: Browns Offered First-Round Pick For Sam Bradford
After the Rams traded Sam Bradford to the Eagles for Nick Foles, both Chip Kelly and Jeff Fisher said that they had been offered a first-round pick for Bradford. It was probably the Browns.
NFL's Charley Casserly reported that the Browns, whose current quarterbacks include Josh McCown and rehabbing Johnny Manziel, offered the 19th overall pick for Bradford, though Casserly didn't specify the other team. (Cleveland also has the No. 12 pick this year.) So either Fisher or Kelly were lying, a mystery third team also wanted Bradford, or the Browns approached both teams. (The Browns probably approached both teams.)
The Rams turning down Cleveland makes sense, since they received a quarterback and future picks instead. Kelly sticking with Bradford also makes sense, because otherwise he would have Mark Sanchez as a starter, and the Nos. 19 and 20 picks. Are those two late selections enough to move up for Marcus Mariota, a strategy Kelly claims he's not pursuing? Are they worth spending on one of the lesser QBs available in the draft? Probably not. The Eagles want a competent quarterback. Sam Bradford is a competent quarterback, when he's able to stand up. Mark Sanchez is not a competent quarterback, regardless of health.
