Report: A 2020 Second-Round Pick Will Complete The Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas Deal
Photo Credit: Maddie Meyer/ [object Object] The Cavaliers and Celtics have reportedly come to an agreement to tie up last week’s blockbuster deal, with Boston throwing in a 2020 second-round pick to soothe Cleveland’s concerns about Isaiah Thomas’s hip. The draft pick rounds out a return for the Cavs that remains pretty hefty, even if Thomas’s health is something of a question mark.
The news was broken by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN:
In its original form last week, the deal sent Kyrie Irving to the Celtics in exchange for Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round pick. But after putting Thomas through a physical, the Cavaliers raised concerns about the point guard’s injured hip, which sidelined him in the Eastern Conference Finals this year and has the potential to keep him out for the start of next season.
Though the Cavs reportedly wanted more here—at least a future first-, rather than a second-rounder, per Woj—their fears about Thomas’s health were apparently not so great that they would have been willing to walk away from the deal altogether. This pick is about as small an asset as Boston could have thrown in, but it’s something extra, and not having to walk away from these renegotiations empty-handed was seemingly enough for Cleveland.
