Red Sox 3B Alex Bregman exits with apparent leg injury
Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (2) bats against Detroit Tigers during the first inning during the first inning at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Boston Red Sox star third baseman Alex Bregman left the first game of Friday's day-night doubleheader against the visiting Baltimore Orioles with quadriceps tightness in his right leg.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bregman lined a hit off the Green Monster in left field and appeared to sustain the injury as he pulled up between first and second base.
Bregman, who went 1-for-2 with a walk, left the game immediately, walking off the field and down the dugout tunnel under his own power.
Bregman was replaced by pinch-runner Abraham Toro, who is playing first base on an injury-riddled Red Sox infield. Triston Casas (out for the season) and Romy Gonzalez are both sidelined. Nick Sogard moved from first base to third base.
In his first season with the Red Sox, Bregman ranks among the leaders in several offensive categories for third basemen, hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 51 games.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston in February after spending his first nine seasons with the Houston Astros. The two-time All-Star and 2024 Gold Glove recipient won two World Series with Houston and hit .272 with 191 home runs and 663 RBIs in 1,111 games.
