Rapper Secretly Uses Apple Store As A Recording Studio
It’s not that hard to fight the man! As long as you live in a city with an easily accessible Apple Store or two. Just ask Prince Harvey, a New York City rapper who recently recorded an entire new album for free on display computers in the SoHo Apple Store.
He told the Daily Beast he decided to take advantage of Apple’s free computers, Wi-Fi, and playlists filled with Hozier and Mumford and Sons after his laptop crapped out:
“It wasn’t my plan to record this at the Apple Store. First, my computer died. Then my external [hard drive] died,” he says. “New York is expensive. I couldn’t just buy another laptop. I just thought, ‘I’m going to die before anyone knows I’m hot.’”
The work environment wasn’t exactly ideal, either:
“One time there was a fire drill and I was trying to save my work, and this lady came over and disconnected the thumb drive while it was saving,” he says.
Recording a whole album in an Apple Store is technically against the rules, but good thing Harvey had the help of two anonymous Apple Store employees who helped him evade security to record five days a week for four months. (By the way, not using any instruments while recording your album is an especially great way to be inconspicuous. Harvey just hummed and sang into the mic on the floor models.) Harvey also figured out that he could avoid getting his work deleted nightly by hiding files in the trash folder on the desktop. Eventually he finished the album, which is great because it would be terrible to die before anyone knows you’re hot.
Harvey’s album PHATASS apparently drops July 26 and, even if it mostly sucks, we still can praise this enterprising young hero for the time he stuck it to Apple. [ Daily Beast]
