Police: Broncos Safety Punched Cab Driver, Tried To Hide In Mulch
John Boyett, a former Colts safety who was arrested in Sept. 2013 while yelling, "You can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player," was arrested Wednesday in a Denver suburb after the Broncos practice squad player's outing at a bar ended with him allegedly trying to hide from police by covering himself in mulch.
Boyett was hanging out at the Sports Book Bar & Grill in Greenwood Village when he got too drunk, per the Denver Post.
Police said Boyett tried to take food off another patron's plate and was asked to leave when he became agitated, threatening to punch a bartender and refusing to pay his tab.
Two police officers responded and called Boyett a cab. About five minutes later, the driver called authorities to report he had been assaulted by Boyett on the 9700 block of East Arapahoe Road, records say.
After allegedly punching the cab driver, Boyett fled into a construction site, took a shovel, and attempted to hide by covering himself in mulch. His plan didn't work.
Boyett apparently pulled the "Do you know who I am?" routine again, telling cops to "contact his boss 'John Elway'" as he was arrested. He was charged with third-degree assault, harassment, and theft.
The Broncos released Boyett today, but hopefully another team will pick him up soon, as life would be a little less colorful without this guy name-dropping as the cops scoop him up.
