Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled catcher Henry Davis and outfielder Jack Suwinski from Triple-A Indianapolis as part of a flurry of roster moves Tuesday before a series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Pirates also recalled infielder Liover Peguero and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Ben Heller from Triple-A. Utility player Ji Hwan Bae (right wrist sprain) was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Monday, and outfielder Michael A. Taylor was placed on the paternity list.
Davis and Suwinski will make an immediate return to the starting lineup, as Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton slotted them in the eighth and ninth spots in the batting order, respectively, for Tuesday's game.
Davis, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 draft, spent most of May in Indianapolis after a slow start to the season led Pittsburgh to option him. The 24-year-old batted .162 with no home runs and four RBIs in 23 major league games to begin the season.
In 23 games at Triple-A, Davis batted .296 with seven home runs, seven doubles and 17 RBIs.
Suwinski, 25, was sent down May 23 after a tough start of his own. He batted .174 with four homers and 13 RBIs in his first 49 games for Pittsburgh. At Indianapolis, he batted .250 with one home run in seven appearances.
Suwinski will start in center field Tuesday to fill in for Bae, who last played on Sunday in a loss at the Toronto Blue Jays. After splitting his time between second base and center field in 2023, Bae has played in just eight games in 2024, including six starts in center. He has a .208 batting average with two RBIs.
Taylor has also been an option in center field in his first season in Pittsburgh. In 47 games, he has batted .198 with one homer and nine RBIs, and he has gone 0-for-9 since his last hit May 24.
To round out the moves, Pittsburgh optioned left-hander Jose Hernandez to Triple-A and designated catcher Grant Koch for assignment.
