Phil Mickelson Wins British Open With Sunday 66, Now “True Champion”
Shots like this approach on the 18th hole at Muirfield helped Phil Mickelson shoot a final round 66 and win the British Open going away. They also got him hilariously overpraised by Paul Azinger.
Mickelson's got five majors now (as many as Byron Nelson), was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame last year, and just started five back on Sunday and still won the British Open by three shots thanks to the best round of the tournament. His status as a "true champion" was not in doubt prior to this tournament, nor is it significantly confirmed by Azinger's effusive praise, nor is it a real thing any thinking person cares about.
But Azinger's the kind of doofus who cites SEAL tactics as a Ryder Cup captain, and, like Mickelson, a rich white guy upset with the government, so maybe this is just closing ranks. Mike Tirico's "The word great gets overused" was a nice counterpoint.
