Paging Dr. Naismith ...
This image was lost some time after publication. As you may have heard, they had a basketball game at Princeton on Wednesday night, with Monmouth taking a hard-fought 41-21 victory over the Tigers. It was the lowest-scoring NCAA Division-I game since the advent of the 3-point line in 1986 — and possibly since 1913, when college basketball opened the bottom of the net. "The zone gave us tons of problems," said Princeton coach Joe Scott. Or to put it another way, Princeton and Monmouth would have to play three games to equal the final score put up by Memphis and UCLA on Nov. 24 — 88-80. Or seven games to match Troy University and Devry on Jan. 12, 1992 — 258-141. (To be fair, it should be noted that both Princeton and Monmouth have had a rash of injuries and suspensions.) But scoring wasn't the Tigers' only problem on Wednesday, evidently. According to the in a sequence late in the first half: "An inbounds pass from sophomore guard Kevin Steuerer bounced off the head of junior forward Luke Owings and out of bounds, knocking loose the 'Home' portion of the sideline scoreboard." Just guessing, but probably no Jack Nicholson or Spike Lee sightings at Jadwin Gym in the near future.
