Of Course Giancarlo Stanton Can Still Bash Gargantuan Dongs
credits: Tom Szczerbowski | source: Getty Images Giancarlo Stanton’s had a rough go of it so far in the Bronx, recording a pair of platinum sombreros and striking out 32 times in 92 plate appearances, enough to turn Yankee Stadium into hostile territory. But during the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 14-1 victory over the Twins Monday, Stanton showed how he can make people forget about any slump: Just hit a big fuckin’ donger that makes the outfield freeze.
Twins pitcher Jake Odorizzi was 105 pitches deep when he hung that delicious 72-mph curve to Stanton. It wasn’t Stanton’s longest homer—a measly 435 feet—but damn if it didn’t feel like one of the most authoritative blasts this side of Franchy Cordero.
Stanton turned this into one of the more impressive games of his career, reaching base five times—something he’s only ever done seven times in his nine-year career. It was a showcase of exactly what the Yankees knew they were signing up for—a player who can spring from ice-cold to supernova between weeks. The team’s hoping last night was the beginning of an upward trend.
