Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn Images World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the Rolex Shanghai Masters because of a left ankle injury on Tuesday.
The move came after he persevered through the injury to win the Japan Open in Tokyo. He suffered the injury in his first-round match against Sebastian Baez but went on to win his eighth title of the season.
"I'm very disappointed to announce that I won't be able to play the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year!" Alcaraz posted to his Instagram Stories. "Unfortunately, I've been struggling with some physical issues and, after discussing with my team, we believe the best decision is to rest and recover. I was really looking forward to playing in front of the amazing fans in Shanghai again."
Taking the place of Alcaraz in the draw will be Corentin Moutet of France.
Jannik Sinner, the No. 2 player in the world, now is the highest-ranked player in Shanghai, where play begins Wednesday.
Sinner and Alcaraz split the four Grand Slam tournaments this season.
