Nick, The Cubs Threw Out Your Grandma’s Personalized Brick
Nick, my man, we have some bad news. Remember when your sweet grandma bought a commemorative brick to be placed outside of Wrigley Field, one that would stand as a testament to her love for you and the Cubbies forever? Well, the Cubs just made a sucker out of your sweet grandma, because they threw that brick in the garbage.
Paul Westermeyer of the Pontiac Daily Leader reported that a few bricks—offered by the Cubs in 2006 for an average of $160—somehow ended up in a Pontiac landfill. The “Suzie” on the left brick, whose name is Suzanne Terrell, confirmed her late father’s gift.
A few Cubs writers had asked what the team planned to do with the commemorative bricks before the renovations started last year, and they didn’t get a direct response. The answer is now clear. Sucks for Nick and his grandma.
Update (12:04 p.m., May 21): After publication, I received emails—including one from the Cubs—pointing out that, as mentioned in the originally linked article, brick owners were notified via vaguely-phrased letters in March about the plan to destroy the bricks and replicate them in a different area.
