MLB Investigates Yankees For Potential Tampering With Mike Trout
This seems like a whole lot of nothing, but we can stand behind anything to make baseball's silly season the sillier. Yesterday, Yankees president Randy Levine had this to say by way of explaining why the team was hesitant to give Robinson Cano too many years:
"We just don't believe our policy is for players over 30 years old, we don't believe in 10 year contracts. They just have not worked out for us, they have not worked out, I believe, for the industry...If Mike Trout was here, I'd recommend the 10 year contract. But for people over 30, I don't believe it makes sense."
Fairly innocuous, and a logical point using a logical example. But you can't talk about another team's player in the context of a potential contract. and according to an MLB spokesperson, baseball is investigating whether Levine is guilty of tampering. MLB often announces these investigations, but rarely finds anyone guilty. The public rebuke is generally enough to keep executives on their toes.
Angels GM Jerry Dipoto declined comment. Trout is arbitration-eligible after next year, and under the Angels' control through the 2017 season—at which point only Albert Pujols will still be on the books. But negotiations on a long-term deal will begin well before that, and the Angels don't want Trout already thinking about a New York payday.
