Minor League Catcher Hospitalized After Brutal Home Plate Collision
Warning: Watching this video might make your teeth rattle.
This happened Wednesday, during the first game of the Double-A Eastern League semifinals between the Erie Seawolves (Tigers affiliate) and the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals). In the bottom of the seventh, Erie second baseman Brandon Douglas charged home from third on a fielder's choice and absolutely annihilated Harrisburg catcher Brian Jeroloman. It's not the easiest thing to watch.
Douglas was safe. Jeroloman, a 28-year-old career minor-leaguer, had to be helped from the field. He had a cut on his face and was taken to the hospital. He was still there as of last night. A team spokesman could not confirm whether Jeroloman was discharged, but he did promise to get back to us with more info. We'll let you know when he does. The Senators have placed Jeroloman on the DL.
Update (4:45 p.m.): A Senators spokesman just wrote back again to say doctors are still running tests on Jeroloman, and that Jeroloman remains hospitalized in Erie, Pa.
