Mets Rookie Steven Matz Had One Hell Of A Debut

The Mets’ Steven Matz played in his first MLB game Sunday against the Reds, and went 3 for 3 at the plate with four RBI. Steven Matz is a pitcher.

Matz put on quite a show as he smacked balls all over Citi Field: a two-RBI double, a single between second and third, and a single that rose just above Brandon Phillips’s glove. His black bat, a present from Las Vegas 51s teammate Matt Reynolds, helped Matz do his damage. With every appearance, fans (and family) got more excited for the local boy from Stony Brook. Matz’s grandpa, adorably pictured above, was dumbfounded after the second hit.

As for his pitching, the kid lasted 7.2 innings with six strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on five hits, and that was after giving up a solo home run to Phillips, the first batter of the game. Not a bad day.
