Mets blast 2 homers, hang on to beat Diamondbacks
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (12) throws to first to complete a double play as Arizona Diamondbacks Ketel Marte (4) ducks during the first inning at Chase Field, May 5, 2025. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso homered, Griffin Canning won his fifth game, and the New York Mets held off the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in Phoenix on Monday.
Alonso's two-run homer off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson (1-1) gave the Mets a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, and Lindor's three-run shot off Ryan Thompson in the seventh stretched it to 5-1.
Alonso, who also singled, is 5-for-11 with four homers and eight RBIs in his career against Nelson.
Josh Naylor had an RBI single and Eugenio Suarez singled in two runs to close the deficit to 5-4 after Dedniel Nunez walked the first three batters in the eighth, but Reed Garrett stranded runners on second and third with one out on a strikeout and a foul out to preserve the lead.
Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his eighth save in as many chances. Alek Thomas reached on first baseman Alonso's throwing error to open the inning, but Thomas was called out attempting to steal, a call upheld by replay review, and Diaz retired the next two.
Corbin Carroll homered and had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who have lost three of four. The teams were meeting for the fourth time in eight days after playing a three-game series in New York last week.
Tyrone Taylor doubled and tripled and Juan Soto reached three times on a single and two walks for the Mets, who had lost six of 10 following a seven-game winning streak.
Canning (5-1) gave up one run and six hits in five-plus innings, leaving after his only walk to Pavin Smith to open the sixth. He struck out six and walked one and is tied with Brandon Pfaadt and Nick Pivetta for the NL lead in wins.
Nelson gave up two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts before leaving after hitting Lindor with one out in the top of the fifth. Nelson, who threw four hitless innings of relief against the Mets last week, made his first start of the season in place of Corbin Burnes, who was skipped because of right shoulder inflammation. Burnes is expected to make his scheduled start Friday.
Carroll hit Canning's second pitch into the right field stands for a 1-0 lead. It was his third leadoff home this season.
