Matt Albers Whacked The Most Improbable Game-Winning Hit Of The MLB Season
Photo via [object Object] It was a pleasant enough day in New York City today, so the Mets and White Sox decided to play a few extra innings this afternoon. The White Sox eventually won, 2-1, in the 13th thanks to the heroics on both sides of the ball of relief pitcher Matt Albers.
The 33-year-old journeyman reliever only had two career hits in the majors before today (both came nearly a decade ago in Houston), but he hit a double in the 13th, scored the go-ahead run from a sacrifice fly, then shut down New York in the bottom of the inning to bring home the win for good measure. I greatly enjoyed the half-assed slide on his big hit.
After advancing on a wild pitch, Jose Abreu brought him home with a sac fly. Albers made quick work of the Mets in the 13th and got himself his second win of the season. After the game, he told reporters he was surprised by the hit and that he grabbed the wrong helmet before he stepped into the box.
He became the first AL relief pitcher in seven years to score the winning run, which’ll give him even more reason to be way too pumped up.
