Mark Sanchez Has "A Leg Up" On The Jets Quarterback Competition
You know spring is here when the Jets are assuring everyone that Mark Sanchez is and will remain their starting quarterback, but if literally anyone else would just step up and play competently the job would be theirs. Except you, Tebow.
New offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is saying all the right things, but the Jets QB situation is so dire that even the right things sound cranky and depressing.
“I certainly like to have competition at every position, including the quarterback spot,” Mornhinweg said in his first comments to reporters since getting hired this offseason. “Mark will probably have just a little bit of a leg up it would appear. But I would like to have competition at that position as well as all the other positions. There are a select few on this football team that have kind of earned the right to step in there as No. 1 on the depth chart. But I would certainly like competition at all of our other spots, including the QB spot.”
In a practical sense, this means nothing. Tim Tebow is likely to be released, even though Mornhinweg had a nice long chat with him about how to best utilize his unique skills. Greg McElroy was good for precisely one quarter against Arizona, and even then he was pretty bad. Sanchez is set to earn $8.25 million this year, and will cost nearly twice that much against the cap if he's cut. The Jets will head to camp with some combination of Sanchez, McElroy, undrafted free agent Matt Simms, and, inshallah, Brady Quinn. We sure hope Sanchez has a leg up on that roster of the damned.
