Marion Bartoli Wins Wimbledon Women's Championship
Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli defeated German Sabine Lisicki this morning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to win Wimbledon. In a wild tournament that saw every single favorite get knocked out, Bartoli was consistent and overwhelmed each opponent she faced without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. The victory is her first Grand Slam win in 47 tries.
She proved too much for Lisicki, and drove the German to tears during the match. Lisicki broke Bartoli early in the first set, but then Bartoli broke right back. She overwhelmed Lisicki with her power game and her confident, clean returns, which only highlighted Lisicki's nerves throughout the match. Bartoli breezed through the first set, 6-1.
It was much of the same in the second, as well, until Lisicki was down 5-1 in the second set and facing triple match point. She rallied to win the game, then won two more to pull back to 5-4. Bartoli regained her composure, though, and won the last game for the title.
"I dreamed about this moment for so long, and I was there in 2007, and I missed it, and I know how it feels," Bartoli said after her win. "It's been my dream since I was six years old."
Bartoli, 28, became the fifth-oldest Grand Slam winner in the Open era with the victory.
